Letter to my One-Year-Old Son

Dear Caleb,

Happy birthday, to my sweet smiley baby boy! Daddy and I are so blessed to have you in our lives. From the first moment that you entered my world, I knew my life would never be the same and that I belonged to you completely. Everyone tells you how challenging parenting is—the sleepless nights, endless dirty diapers, worrying, etc—and it’s all true, of course, but they forgot to tell us how fun it is despite all that other stuff! Because you are the funnest person your dad and I have ever met! You fill our hearts with such joy and laughter from the moment you open your eyes (at 5am) in the morning just rearing to go, until you laugh yourself to sleep at night. You are a bright and wondrous light, my little love.

So today, on the first anniversary of your birth, I just want to say how much I love you.  I love your four little teeth. I love the way you crinkle your nose when you laugh just like your daddy does. I love how you scream with glee when you do something by yourself for the first time. I love your open-mouth kisses. How you yell so loud you create an echo, which thrills you so you yell again, louder. I love your little boy energy, always go go go! That you already know how to share. I love how you squeal with happiness when we pretend-chase you, and how you always let us catch you. I love how much you love your grandparents. I love every little thing about you, my sweet boy.

My hopes for you in life aren’t grand or novel, but they’re what my mother has always wanted for us, and her mother for her: I hope that you’re happy. I hope that we raise you to be able to stand up by yourself, but know that we are always here to lean on. As wise Clooney once said, "You give your children enough money to do something but not enough to do nothing." Yep, we're gonna do that too. And yep, I just quoted Clooney.

I hope that you see all four corners of the world, for it is only through adventure that we discover our true selves (don’t worry we’re getting you a passport soon). I hope you always keep that rambunctious energy, precocious spirit, and infectious smile.

I hope that you know that your Daddy and I will love you forever, unconditionally. You are our greatest adventure, and we are so lucky.

Happy birthday, son!

Mama (and Dada)

I'll leave y'all with this "infographic" I spent the last three hours working on... I hope our future child(ren) doesn't (don't) expect all this too (LOL). Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
